Signature Learning Experience

The Signature Learning Experience is a unique educational opportunity providing Centennial students with everything they need to become global citizens ready to make their mark on the world.

An invaluable finishing touch to every program of study offered at Centennial College, the SLE engages students in such issues as diversity and social justice. Each student also produces a portfolio documenting their personal accomplishments – allowing them to stand out in a crowded employment market.

Our Signature Learning Experience Has Four Key Components:

GNED 500 – a required General Education course entitled "Global Citizenship: From Social Analysis to Social Action"
Portfolio Learning – the use of portfolios for our students as evidence of their learning throughout their programs of study
Professional Development and Learning for all college staff – to teach GNED 500, to support portfolio learning, or to support the SLE through integration of equitable and inclusive practices in curriculum
Embedding of Equity Competencies across the college – to develop in each student and staff member the competencies for learning, teaching and working that value diversity and difference, and embrace and promote equity and inclusion

Building Reflective And Critical Thinkers

The SLE is more than just a general education course. The course itself provides a framework for exploring five core concepts:

Personal Identity and Values
Inequality and Equity
Social Analysis
Social Action
Reflective Practice

Through the course the understanding of historical and theoretical concepts is developed. Additionally, critical thinking and analytical skills are promoted. The portfolio process captures the Reflective Practice element and provides a means of documenting the personal, subject-related, career-related and social learning that the student experiences; in the GNED 500 course, and then as their program continues.

Reflective practice encourages regular examination and reflection on one’s own work and can be used to set goals for further growth and development.
